Scythian
Washington DC-based Scythian (sith-ee-yin) began over 12 years ago as a bunch of college buddies playing Celtic music in the streets and has grown to be a headliner on the US Celtic Festival Circuit as well as a name in the Bluegrass/Americana Festival Circuit. They found that their brand of high-energy folk music found a resonance that led The Washington Post to state: “Scythian’s enthusiasm is contagious, and shows seem to end with everyone dancing, jumping around or hoisting glasses.” For over 12 years they have found success as an independent band and have played over 1,300 shows all over the united states, Europe, Canada and as far away as Australia.
The calling card of Scythian is their ability to engage their audience no matter the venue or circumstance and truly every Scythian shows ends with people dancing, smiling and covered with sweat. This is best summed up by The Camel-City Dispatch (Winston-Salem, North Carolina): “[Scythian gives] no quarter in their quest to entertain and bring a joy to their music that gives it an irony-free, wide open feel of manic possibility. The playing is technically brilliant, but it is the energy that carries the day."
Poor Man’s Gambit
Poor Man's Gambit is a trio of traditional artists comprised of Corey Purcell (button accordion, cittern, vocals, bodhran, dance), Federico Betti (guitar, fiddle), and Deirdre Lockman (fiddle, vocals, dance). Initially formed in 2015, the band has performed hundreds of shows around the U.S., and has completed two tours of the UK and Ireland.
19th Street Band
Characterized by high energy and strong vocal harmonies, The 19th Street Band brings together a constellation of Americana, country and rock. They ignite an audience with their passion for music, their magnetic presence and enthusiasm. The Celtic vibe that Caolaidhe Davis (guitar player and vocalist) blends with fiddle/mandolin player, vocalist (and wife), Meghan, creates a joy-filled chemistry that no crowd can resist. Add to the mix the talented rhythm section, Greg Hardin (bass) & Patty Dougherty (drums), and this band will have every crowd enthralled. Bridging the musical traditions of bluegrass and roots from Ireland to the Appalachian, their eclectic gypsy-rock spirit literally leaps from the stage and engages the crowd in the music. Their clever turns of phrase and unexpected syncopation teases the audience into wanting more from every song and set. They are addictive.
Boyle School
The Mission of the Boyle School of Irish Dance is to enrich the lives of children and families through the rich culture and heritage of Irish Dance. We strive to help our students grow into strong, confident, kind adults through the experiences they will have while dancing with our school. The Boyle School strives to offer an environment for all dancers to exercise and share their talents with the community whether through performance, competition or simply for the joy of dancing.
The party goes on! Head to Kirwan’s on the Wharf for more live music, food and fun. Then join the lads from Scythian for a second show at Union Stage!
